A black & white film unlike anything in the usual film drawer.
Film Washi W is a hand-coated, ISO 25 orthocromatic black & white film made on Japanese Kozo washi paper. Produced in France in small batches, W combines a traditional photographic emulsion with an unusually delicate paper base to create a negative with a distinctive fibre texture and pictorial character.
Rather than simply recording a scene, Washi W becomes part of the image.
Its orthochromatic emulsion is particularly sensitive to blue light, less sensitive to green and insensitive to red. This can produce striking tonal interpretations that differ considerably from conventional panchromatic films.
W is especially interesting for architecture, urban photography, portraits and still life, where its unusual rendering can become part of the creative process.

A specialty film for photographers who want something different
Washi W is not a conventional B&W film. The paper base, low ISO and unusual spectral sensitivity mean that exposure and processing require a little more consideration.
The 120 roll can be loaded like a conventional 120 film, while the 4×5 sheets can be loaded under a red safelight. Film Washi recommends careful handling of the paper-based film and exposure settings appropriate to the lighting and developer being used.
That extra involvement is part of the appeal.
